Alexandr Korshunov is the chairman of the Supreme Council, the parliament of the unrecognized Transnistrian republic and one of the leaders of Obnovlenye party - which is ally to the United Russia, the Kremlin-backed ruling party in the Russian Federation.
As a building engineer, prior to his entry into politics he had worked as a programming engineer at Ptitza, a local company, and advanced there to a managing position.
Although he was member of a political party, in 2010 he successfully ran for a seat in the regional legislature as an independent. Five years later Mr. Korshunov got re-elected.
