Mihail Formuzal
former governor
Date of Birth: 07.11.1959
Place of Birth: Besghioz village, Ceadir-Lunga district
Citizenship: Republic of Moldova
Mihail Formuzal is a career military. In 1983 he graduated from the High Military School for Artillery Commanders in Odessa, then Soviet Ukraine, and until 1994 he held various commanding posts in the USSR armed forces. When the Soviet Union disintegrated he remained an active duty officer in Moldova’s National Army. In November 1994 Mr. Formuzal was discharged in major’s rank.
In 1995, Mr. Formuzal received the post of deputy to the mayor of Ceadir-Lunga, a town in the Gagauzian autonomy. Four years later he was elected himself as the head of the town administration, and kept the job for two consecutive mandates.
In 2006, Mihail Formuzal won the election for the governor of Gagauzia, defeating in the second round his opponent Nicolai Dudoglo. Four years later Mr. Formuzal won a new mandate, again after defeating Mr. Dudoglo in the second round.
In 2011, Mihail Formuzal was elected as chairman of the Party of Regions, a pro-Russia political force, and resigned from its leadership in 2016 in favor of Alexander Kalinin, head of the Moldovan Diaspora Congress in Russia. The Party of Regions advertised for the entry of Moldova into the Russia-led Euroasian Customs Union.
In 2014, Mr. Formuzal - using his political status - supported a referendum seeking Gagauzia’s entry in the Euroasian Customs Union. The results showed that 98% of Gagauzian voters favored such a path but the central government in Chisinau branded the referendum as illegitimate and the Prosecutor-General’s Office filed a case for despotism.
In 2015 the second mandate as Gagauzia’s governor came to an end and Mr. Formuzal retired from public life. In a discussion with RISE Moldova, he said he took “a political vacation.”
