A graduate of the Odessa Polytechnic Institute, Vasili Chirtoca worked in the Soviet era as an engineer at a public design institute in Moldova, and later advanced to the office of director of the Chisinau branch of the Novosibirsk State Institute of Design.
In 1989, close to the sunset of the Soviet Union, Mr. Chirtoca went in for business. He founded a cooperative for the design and construction of industrial systems for wastewater management. It later became a part of his financial-industrial group DAAC Hermes, which he runs to this day.
During the mass privatization of vouchers, Mr. Chirtoca founded an investment fund called DAAC Invest, which over time became a shareholder in several companies in Moldova. Currently, the DAAC Hermes group includes more than 40 companies in various industries. Mr. Chirtoca, his wife Valentina, and their two sons are among associates / shareholders, either directly or indirectly.
He also tried his strength in politics. In 1997, along with other businessmen, he created the Furnica (Ant) Party and from there in 1998 he joined the Moldovan Democratic Party, which he abandoned in 2000. He made a second return into political life in 2015, trying to win the office of mayor of the capital as a candidate on behalf of the Communists Party. The local election earned him a seat in the Chisinau Municipal Council, which he retained four years later - this time as a man of the Socialists Party.
