Dumitru Diacov, a journalist by training, is one among those who enjoyed the longest political career. He walked into political life during the early parliamentary elections in February 1994, on the lists of the Moldovan Agrarian Democratic Party (PDAM). Mr. Diacov kept a seat in the legislature after most elections – in 1998, 2005, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
In 1997, Mr. Diacov was among the founders of the Movement for a Democratic and Prospering Moldova, which three years later was re-baptized into PDM, with Mr. Diacov holding the top post. In the April 2009 election, the party emerged among the losers but in the early polls the very next July it passed the threshold. Mr. Diacov surrendedred the leadership to Marian Lupu, a Communist runagate, while assuming the title of honorary chairman.
