Place of Birth: Costuleni village, Ungheni district
Citizenship: Republic of Moldova
Octavian Ticu is a historian and professional boxer. He had worked a long time at the Moldovan Free International University (ULIM), as a lecturer, dean, and director of ULIM’s Institute of History and Political Sciences. He also acted as a guest lecturer at universities in seven countries. Mr. Ticu is the author of ten books about humanity development, political systems, and governance; his teachings have been published in Romania, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
His first experience in politics happened in 2013; he served as the minister of youth and sports on a recommendation from the Liberal Party. In March 2015 he joined the team of Iurie Leanca and co-founded the Moldovan European People’s Party – a project of then Prime Minister Leanca upon his breakup from the Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party.
In the 24 February 2019 elections he competed both on the party national list and in a uninominal constituency, #16 Ungheni, on behalf of ACUM, a bloc of the Action and Solidarity Party and the Dignity and Truth Platform. He was luckier as a candidate on the party list after having lost to his Democratic rival in his native district. He would not give up his political ambitions even at the 1 November 2020 presidential elections. He is supported by the PUN party. In the first round of the scrutiny, he was awarded only 2.01% of the votes.
He also ran in the parliamentary elections in the summer of 2021, heading the PUN list, but the party did not enter Parliament. At the end of the year, he resigned from the party leadership.
In 2024, he entered the presidential race again, this time being supported by the "Together" Electoral Bloc, formed by the Dignity and Truth Platform, the Party of Change, and the League of Cities and Towns.
Mr. Ticu was seven times a national boxing champion and, in 1996, the first Moldovan boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games. In 2010, Acting President Mihai Ghimpu awarded him a Civic Merit Medal.
