 Ion Muruianu
 judge
Date of Birth: 10.07.1956
Place of Birth: Ozerne village, Izmail district, Odessa region, Ukraine
Citizenship: Republic of Moldova
With a 30-year career behind Ion Muruianu entered the judiciary system in 1990, as a judge in the Buiucani District Court of Chisinau, and in five years he took over as the deputy chairman of this institution. His career received a boost when the Communists came to power. In 2001 President Vladimir Voronin promoted Mr. Muruianu to the post of chairman of the Buiucani District Court. Three years later he yielded a job in the Supreme Court of Justice and in 2007 he filled in the seat of its chairman.

When the Communists lost the power in 2009 and new authorities sacked Mr. Muruianu several times, each time he returned to the previous position thanks to shielding from the Constitutional Court. At an end Mr. Muruianu accepted to get moved to the Chisinau Court of Appeal, where he acts as a judge without any administrative prerogatives.

In 2010, the time he was still acting as the head of the Supreme Court of Justice, he called journalists “mad dogs […] who are dangerous for society” while taking the floor at the general assembly of judges. His labeling attracted anger from civil society and the media who immediately demanded his resignation.

A RISE Moldova investigation dated 2017 demonstrates that Mr. Muruianu’s daughter, Mihaela Muruianu, had received 1.6 million lei from two companies involved in the billion-dollars worth of Russian money laundering scheme. Miss Muruianu - a student at Imperial College London at that time - rented a luxury apartment near the Buckingham Palace. The judge claimed that the money was a donation from a rich businessman who owns shares in several banks - without ever revealing his name.
