With a degree as an obstetrician/gynecologist, Stefan Gatcan entered the Parliament after the March 2020 new elections on behalf of the Socialists, in the constituency #38 Hincesti. On 28 June 2020 however he defected the Socialist faction and joined the Pro Moldova group.

His career in medicine started in 1985, at the Ungheni District Hospital, first as an ordinator, then as a department chief, and ultimately as the director of the local maternity hospital. In 1999 he founded in the capital a private clinic called Extramed and in 2002 he began lecturing at the Moldovan State University of Medicine and Pharmacy.

During 2012-2016 Mr. Gatcan acted as the director of the Mother and Child Institute in Chisinau. Numerous complaints on his name forced the Ministry of Health in 2015 to launch an investigation on how the management complied with the sanitary requirements and patent admission rules.

A ministerial committee found irregularities and one of these was that Stefan Gatcan has carried out more surgeries than the Ministry of Health had allowed. Under his watch the Mother and Child Institute’s debts soared more than 41-fold and the personnel obliged patients to buy medication on their own expense, though the health insurance should have covered it all. After two formal warnings, the health authority fired Stefan Gatcan. The latter disputed this decision in a court of law and later stepped back.
