Ion Dodon has studied law at the Moldovan State University (USM) and has defended his master’s degree at the Moldovan Academy of Public Administration. For five years, he worked in various positions at the Ministry of Health, rising from a legal consultant to the chief of the legal affairs and secretariat department.

When Vitalie Pirlog was Moldova’s justice minister, Mr. Dodon took over as the head of the institution’s department for international judiciary cooperation. Later he was appointed as a senior consultant in the government led by Zinaida Grecianii.

For nine years, Ion Dodon worked as a lawyer at the law office Pro Dreptate (pro justice). Also worked as an adviser in the staff of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, and later as a state secretary for health at the time Ala Nimerenco was the minister.

Aside from public administration jobs, Mr. Dodon has been teaching for 14 years. During seven years he was a lecturer at the Public Health Management School of the Moldovan Medical and Pharmacy University, and another seven years he was a university lecturer at the Law Department of USM.

In September 2020, Ion Dodon was appointed as a judge at Causeni Court, for a five-year term. In November 2021, however, he resigned from the post. Justice Minister Sergiu Litvinenco described his departure as a loss for Moldova’s justice system.

Ion Dodon accepted to act as the director of the National Health Insurance Company; the post was vacated in August 2021 upon the dismissal of former director Valentina Buliga.
