Oazu Nantoi has been in politics for 30 years. He began his career as deputy chairman of the council of the Moldovan People’s Front, a nationalist movement at the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union. In 1990 he appeared as one of three co-leaders of the Moldovan Social Democratic Party.

In 2007 he joined the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), then led by Dumitru Diacov, and in 2008 he rose to PDM’s deputy chairman. During 2007-2009 Mr. Nantoi served as a municipal councilor in the capital on behalf of PDM and in 2009 he was elected as an MP where he labored until 2010. When Vladimir Plahotniuc was added as second on PDM’s candidate list for the November 2010 elections, Mr. Nantoi announced his withdrawal from politics. Officially he retired from PDM in summer 2011.

In 2012, with no political affiliation Mr. Nantoi decided to run independently for president but his candidacy never get to a vote procedure as the coalition parties were short of finding compromise about him.

The year of 2015 found Mr. Nantoi in the team of the Moldovan European People’s Party (PPEM) led by Iurie Leancă who defected the Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party. PPEM fielded Mr. Nantoi as its candidate for the job of mayor in Chișinău; he came only third but took over as leader of the PPEM faction in the Municipal Council, until 2018.

Also in 2015 Oazu Nantoi takes an active part in the formation of the Dignity and Truth Platform (DA) as a founding member. This civic movement later became a political party.

Mr. Nantoi became an elected MP in the 24 February 2019 parliamentary elections on behalf of ACUM (PAS+DA bloc). Oazu Nantoi competed in the uninominal constituency #12 – Sîngerei and lost to his Democratic opponent.

In the past Mr. Nantoi was the programs director at the Public Policies Institute, a nonprofit for public opinion research and sociological studies. He is also a recognized expert in Transnistria issues.

Oazu Nantoi’s name can be found in a RISE Moldova investigation about the privatization of Aroma, a brandy-maker, by Cypriot investors via Euro-Alco SRL. Mr. Nantoi represented the Cypriot buyers in that transaction.
