Ion Perju’s first job was a post of teacher at the boarding school in his native village. He completed economic studies at the Moldovan Agricultural University and upon graduation he got hired as a tax inspector and later worked as a lecturer at the Moldovan Police Academy. For five years he acted as a consultant at the National Federation of Savings and Loan Associations.
In 2006 he entered the public service as an employee at the Ministry of Agriculture. In 2008-2009 he acted as the deputy minister of agriculture and survived in this post three prime ministers: Vasile Tarlev, Zinaida Greceanîi, and Vladimir Filat.
After his departure from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Perju participated in several programs for Moldovan farmers with international funding; in 2011-2016 he acted as the deputy chief of party at the USAID-funded Agricultural Competitiveness and Enterprise Development project, which was carried out by a US corporation.
In early 2017 he accepted to become President Igor Dodon’s adviser on agricultural and public administration issues and in the new government led by Ion Chicu in 2019 he took over as the minister of agriculture.
