Maria Ciobanu is a teacher. Between 1977 and 2010 she worked in a number of public schools in Nisporeni and at the Education Department in the same district. Her political career kicked off in 2007. She first joined the Social Liberal Party and in a year she defected to the Moldovan Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM)|, which secured her a seat in Parliament in 2010 until 2018.

In the 2019 parliamentary elections Mrs. Ciobanu ran for a seat as part of the ACUM bloc, in Constituency №14 Telenesti, though she was a deputy chairwoman of PLDM [ACUM is made of the Action and Solidarity Party and the Dignity and Truth Platform]. There she won beating her Democratic opponent Vadim Lelic by a 2% margin.

In March 2019 PLDM dismissed Maria Ciobanu and other deputies to the party leader. Some time later she designed from the party.
