Eduard Smirnov is a doctor in history sciences and a former political advisor to Igor Dodon during the period the latter acted as chairman of the Moldovan Socialists Party (PSRM).
Mr. Smirnov in fact held the position of co-chairman of the Patria-Rodina (Fatherland) Party of Socialists, the predecessor of PSRM that never acceeded to the Parliament. Things changed in 2011 when Igor Dodon took over the party’s leadership and changed its name. At the November 2014 elections Mr. Smirnov’s name was the third in PSRM’s national candidate list; he became an elected MP at the age of 75 – he was the eldest among the rest of MPs. After the February 2019 elections he ran for Parliament as part of PSRM’s national candidate list and succeeded to keep his seat.
